Lawn aeration is one of the simplest ways to get your lawn off to a good start in the spring. Ottawa, and Orleans commonly gets a lot of snow over the winter months. The weight of the snow and ice compacts the soil making it harder for the grass roots to grow keeping your lawn thinner and weaker.
Although you can use spiked aerating tools, the best way to aerate is by using a lawn aerator that removes plugs from the ground. Even though spiked tools open up the ground, they actually add to the compaction not loosening up the soil, and making it harder for young grass roots to grow.
Aerating is an effective way of allowing oxygen, moisture, and nutrients deeper into the ground where the roots will have easy access getting a stronger and deeper root system.
In turn, a healthy and lush lawn will help keep moisture in the ground during hotter months, and make it harder for weeds to compete in the early growing season. After aerating is a perfect time to overseed and fertilize. A healthy and thick lawn is the best defense against weeds.
